A new poll says most Americans believe the US economy is doing OK, but the public is divided on whether they are getting a good deal of pay raises and other benefits
The share of Americans who believe the economy is getting a “good deal” of pay and benefits rose to 45% in a new survey from the Public Religion Research Institute.
The survey, conducted between March 20 and March 21, found that nearly two-thirds of respondents (64%) believe the current unemployment rate of 6.6% is a fair amount.
Meanwhile, more than half (54%) of respondents believe the national debt is too high, while 19% said they thought the debt was about right.
More than three-quarters of respondents said the country has gotten some kind of pay raise, while just 15% of respondents disagreed.
Overall, 55% of Americans say they believe their government is doing a good job handling the economy.
The public is split on whether a pay raise is worth it, with more than four-in-ten (44%) saying they think a raise is not worth it.
The poll was conducted by phone between March 21 and March 22 among 1,004 adults, and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
