On January 9, the NFL announced that former Baltimore Ravens quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo would not be returning to the NFL after being arrested for DUI on July 3, 2018.
The news was met with mixed reactions.
Garoppoli had led the Ravens to a Super Bowl win in 2017, and his time with the team was a success.
The Ravens’ franchise tag was set to be worth $18.3 million over the next two years.
He was reportedly offered a contract worth $25 million, but the team declined to match that.
However, in 2018, the Ravens re-signed him to a five-year deal worth $37 million.
His cap hit jumped from $2.7 million to $6.4 million over five years, a salary cap hit of $21.8 million.
However and when Garoppolan returned to the field, he wasn’t nearly as dominant as he once was.
After a disappointing 2017 season, Garoppol finished with a 5-9 record with a 4-8 record in 2018.
His production dropped off significantly in the offseason, with Garoppolas numbers falling from a career-best 1,099 yards rushing to 669.
Garappol’s numbers were the lowest of his career.
However the Ravens were able to re-sign him to the tag, which means he’ll get paid for the remainder of the season.
This news could mean a lot for Garopplols future.
The NFL released its final roster for the 2019 season on January 20, 2018, which will have a cap hit set at $123 million.
With the Ravens in free agency, it’s unlikely that Garoppo will be able to find a new team willing to pay him that much money.
The team will have plenty of cap room to sign other players to extensions.
The only question is if GaroppOLo will stay in Baltimore.
In his first two years with the Ravens, Garolos production was down.
He finished with 3,097 yards rushing and only three touchdowns.
Garolol had an average of 3.4 yards per carry in 2019, the third lowest of all running backs.
He averaged 2.4 YPC and only two touchdowns in 2015.
Garofolos career was cut short by injuries in both of his seasons in Baltimore, with both of them ending in free agent signings.
Garapolos contract is set to expire at the end of the 2019 NFL season, which should help to get him off the market.
However he will not be the only free agent that Garopolos team has interest in.
The Raiders are reportedly interested in Garoppols services.
The Jaguars are also interested in him, according to an NFL source.
Both of those teams have a quarterback that could be available at the start of the 2020 season, with Jacksonville already signed former Raiders QB Blake Bortles to a contract that would pay him $11 million over four years.
The 49ers have been linked to Garoppola, but they could not come to an agreement on his terms.
The Eagles are also looking to move on from Garoppolis contract, according a source.
The Browns are reportedly also interested, as they have signed former Titans QB Zach Mettenberger to a deal that would be worth the Browns $10.5 million over three years.
Garoffolo has not yet commented on his future.
